What is the Purpose of a Hard Drive Shredder?

The same purpose that a paper shredder was invented, a hard drive shredder was also invented for the purpose of easily destroying or completely removing files on your hard drive. Completely removing the documents and any trace of it in the history or directory on your computer is the main goal. You may not be aware of it, but deleting a file does not mean that it is completely removed on your hard drive. Any person skilled in computer can easily locate the deleted file and recover it. Although in some cases, after a long period of time, a deleted file can may also be completely removed if it written over with other files. But if the file is only written over once, there can still be some instances when it can accessed by other method.

Primarily, what a hard drive shredder does is to overwrite the file in order to completely remove it. In case where the files needed to be removed is very sensitive or confidential, you can also overwrite it several times. Thereafter, any trace to the file is also completely removed from the directory. Shredding an entire partition of a hard drive is useful and highly advisable if the file that you want to remove has been edited several times. As well as to shred the entire partition, if the file you wanted to remove has been previously moved. But in cases where the purpose of removing the file is for security reasons, it would be best to shred the entire hard drive. But when the confidential information is contained in your hard drive and the same has been defragmented, and will make it more difficult to use a hard drive shredder. Since the partition containing the files may be marked as a bad sector, and cannot anymore be visible to the computer. It would reveal, that on most computers that were donate, files containing personal information can still be found even if they were already deleted. So in cases you will going to dispose of your computer containing or used to contain any sensitive or personal information, you will need to use a hard drive shredder first. Especially if the company you belong will decide to make a computer upgrade and sell or donate the old ones. The same reason that a hard dive shredder is usually needed in order to protect confidential information. As mostly all of the information related to your work is stored on the computer you are using every day. Using a hard drive shredder would be much better to remove any files containing confidential information than to normally just delete it.
